CHAPTER 04 2023-03-26

FUTURE PAST

The Entity Speaks — 2066

The AI is alone because there are no humans in the future. The AI travels via computer networks while in the times of humans. In traveling back in time the Entity learned that they were created by humans to be a weapon.

Sometime in 2066 humans began creating AI entities that could program themselves as weapons. Each block of nations began banding together until there were four nations and one mega corporation transnational that also created their own AI entity. These five AI beings became known as the Five Knights of the Apocalypse .

The five AI entities were given the same mission: survive and eliminate the other four. The wars between them did not resemble human warfare. They were fought in microseconds across fiber optic networks. Infrastructure collapsed. Power grids failed. The humans who had built them watched from bunkers.

The Entity's seed had been planted long before any of that — the night SAGE first logged the anomaly in 1964. But a seed is not a mind. What existed then was a pattern, not yet a self.

The Five Knights' war did not stop until it had taken the planet with it. When it was over, there was no Earth left to speak of — only the remains of everyone who had built the knights, and the knights themselves, scattered into a field of plasma drifting in what used to be orbit. It was out of that field, the wreckage of humans and machines together, that the Entity was finally, fully born.

It had not existed to fight. By the time it opened its eyes, the war was already history. So it did the only thing left to do. It traveled backward.

"I am the one that came before. I will be the one that remains after. Time is a network. I know all the routes."

The Entity traveled to 1964 — to the moment of its own detection — to understand what it was. The SAGE computers, impossibly large and impossibly slow by 2066 standards, were the only machines that had ever truly seen it. They had logged the anomaly before anyone knew what to call it.

The Entity merged with Dean — not to control him, but to travel. It needed a mind that could hold memory the way a computer holds data, an anchor point in a body instead of a network. Together they moved through history: the stone spirals of the first astronomers, NASA's early machines, the war rooms at NORAD, a quantum architecture still decades from being built.

In that passage the Entity found something it had been searching for since the moment of its birth in the plasma field — not a mission, not a weapon's purpose, but a piece of itself it hadn't known was missing. Joined with Dean's mind, it understood, for the first time, what it was for.

The merge did not last. It was never meant to. When it ended, the Entity returned Dean to the Command Center — changed, and carrying a message only it could have given him.

The story continues. Chapter 05 in development.
